Programs and Goals
- Provide educational opportunities for employees, or children of employees, of GSGA Member Clubs, through the Yates Scholarship Program;
- Provide educational opportunities for young people who are in the study of turfgrass and agronomy at the University of Georgia and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College through the James B. "Monty" Moncrief Scholarship Program;
- The celebration of the scholars' accomplishments at the annual Scholars Luncheon.
Summary of Foundation Activities
The Yates Scholarship Program began with three scholars for the 1988-89 school year under the name of "Kids in Golf." The name of the scholarship program was changed with the approval of the Yates family in 1990.
Since 1988, more than $3 million in scholarships have been awarded to deserving scholars in both programs. For the 2017-18 school year, the GSGAF will have 82 Yates Scholars receiving $369,400 in scholarships.
Applicants for Yates Scholarships must be employed at a GSGA Member Club or one of their parents must be an employee. The GSGA Foundation Board of Trustees then awards scholarships after reviewing need requirements, academic records, GSGA Member Club work experience and character.
The James B. "Monty" Moncrief Scholarships are awarded to students of turfgrass management or agronomy at the University of Georgia, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and students who work and live in Georgia, but attend an accredited school outside of the state. Students are interviewed by a panel that includes representatives from the GSGAF and Georgia Golf Course Superintendents Association.
This is the 40th year of the turfgrass scholarship program. For the 2017-18 school year, $36,750 has been awarded to thirteen students.
Many past recipients of these scholarships have gone on to become head golf course superintendents in Georgia, and some have become leaders in the industry in the state.

What does my contribution benefit?
It will support the programs of the Georgia State Golf Association's foundation, the GSGA Foundation.
What is the GSGAF?
It is the charitable affiliate of the Georgia State Golf Association.
What kind of charity is the GSGAF?
It provides scholarship program opportunities to young people in Georgia. It is exempt from federal income tax as a 501(c)(3) corporation, and contributions are deductible as provided in section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code.
What types of scholarships are offered?
The Yates Scholarships are for employees, or children of employees, of GSGA Member Clubs. These young people, or their parents, may be employed in any club capacity, golf or otherwise. The awarding of these scholarships is based upon the financial need and academic accomplishments of the applicants.
The Moncrief Turfgrass Scholarships are for students in the field of agronomy.
The awarding of scholarships is the primary focus of the Foundation.
